    Here's my first AOL tip

Saving web sites to your "Favorite Places"
The easiest way to do this is to go to the menu at the top of the screen, click on Window and then click on Add To Favorite Places (This only works if you are using the AOL web browser). This will save the link to this page in your Favorite Places list and you will be able to find my page later.

An alternative is to use the Favorite Places icon. See that little heart icon in the upper right hand corner of this window (you will only see this if you are using the AOL Web Browser)? Use your mouse to "drag-and-drop" it into the Heart/Folder on your top icon bar.

    Sending Hyperlinks in E-Mail

When you find a great online area that you would like to share with someone, don't just tell them about it, send them a hyperlink in e-mail!

    - Go to the area you would like to share.
    - Bring up a blank e-mail by clicking the Compose/Write icon in the toolbar.
    - Drag the heart icon from the upper right corner of the area into the Message section of the e-mail window. A blue hyperlink appears in your e-mail message.
    - Address it, add a subject and your personal note and it's ready to send.

    Even Slicker...

    - Go to the area you would like to share.
    - Click the heart icon in the upper right corner of the area.
    - A window will appear with three choices:
    ---- Add to Favorites
    ---- Insert in Instant Message
    ---- Insert in Mail
    - Click Insert in Mail and a Write Mail window will open with the subject line filled in and the hyperlink already in the body of the message.

You've already figured out that this same process works to put a hyperlink in an Instant Message, haven't you? Now you're dangerous. Go tell a friend.

    Screen Capture

There may be times when you wish you could place a copy of what you see on your screen into another document. Windows provides you with a simple and effective means for capturing a screen shot.

    Here's how you do it:

1 - To capture everything you see on the monitor, press the [PrintScrn] key
2 - To capture only the active window, press the [Alt] and [PrintScrn] keys together.

Windows copies a picture of the screen or active window to the Clipboard. From there, you can paste the picture into your word processor, spreadsheet, or virtually any Windows program, using that application's Edit and Paste commands.

    AOL Buddy List Symbols

Have you wondered what the symbols that appear next to screen names in your Buddy List(R) mean?

An asterisk next to a screen name means that person just logged on.

    Example: BuddyBeMe509*

When a name appears within parenthesis, you know that person just logged off -- you can't send an Instant Message if the screen name is enclosed in parenthesis.

    Example: (BuddyBeMe509)

    Transferring Files Between Computers

If you would like to transfer files from one computer to another (say from office to home) the easiest way is to e-mail the file to yourself.

    July 2000

    Check E-Mail Status

You can check delivery status of mail sent to any other AOL member. (Note that this does not apply to Internet-bound e-mail.)

    PC Users:
Go to your Mail menu and click Sent Mail/Check Mail You've Sent. Highlight a message and click Status at the bottom to find out if and when the individual read the mail.

    Mac Users:
Go to your Mail menu and click Read Mail. Click on the Sent Mail tab. Highlight a message and click the Status button in the lower right to find out if and when the individual read the mail.

The Original "7 Great AOL Tips"

    Return Home

I was considering removing these tips, since they're old, but I noticed that they're all still valid tips. Tip number 6 differs for AOL 3.0 and AOL 4.0. (Haven't tested them against 5.0 & 6.0 yet, but I bet most will still work)

    1. It's not necessary to click on Send when IM'ing. Instead, press Ctrl/Enter to send an IM line. This trick also works when sending an e-Mail. (Note: for some PCs it's necessary to press Tab key and the Space Bar, instead of Ctrl and Enter.)

    2. To use the e-mail Reply feature in AOL to reply to specific text, highlight the text that you are replying to and then click Reply.

    3. Include World Wide Web "hyperlinks", that can be clicked on in IMs and e-mails. You can create hyperlinks by simply dragging-and-dropping icons from your Favorite Places list onto your IMs or e-Mails. This is new to AOL 3.0.

    4. Use the Buddy Lists feature located under Members in your menu. It really works!!! Most of the time that is ;-)

    5. To turn Instant Messages (IM) off, send an IM to $im_off with anything typed in the message area. To turn IMing back on, send an IM to $im_on with any message in the message area.

    6. Get better quality photographic images in your AOL web browser

    If you're using AOL 3.0:

Click on Members | Preference | WWW and select "Uncompressed Graphics", instead of "Compressed Graphics". If you are unhappy with the results of this switch, go back in and reset AOL to "Compressed Graphics."

    If you're using AOL 4.0:

    7. Press Alt/Tab to cycle through programs that are open. This is a GREAT tip!!!

    Knowledge shared is power squared!!!
